Liberty Discussion on ” What Motivates People”

Liberty Discussion is a program designed to engage and inform the core members on the ideas of market economy and classical liberal ideas. Discussions are made on contemporary issues (local or national) through open market perspective. The article is selected and shared within the members to prepare oneself for the program. The program is organized at the venue of Bikalpa – an Alternative on every alternative Saturday (twice a month).

Bikalpa, an Alternative, organized a regular Liberty discussion on ‘What Motivates People’ on 6 February 2021.The discussion began by providing an overview of people’s motivation on how incentives drive people to work. The views of the participants were mixed. Participants shared individuals have their self-interest while pursuing their work. Incentives are tangible/monetary and intangible; therefore, both positive and negative incentives affect people’s choices and behavior. Examples highlighted How the Private sector has a higher efficiency level because of the right incentives (profit) and governance mechanism (Accountability).
On the contrary, the public sector looks inefficient because of the governance system. Similarly, Participants argued about the morality of the market. Since profit maximization is the biggest motivation for the market, they create an inadequate supply of goods during the crisis. Participant’s also emphasized the role of the Government to control the monopoly of the market.
Overall, the participants also shared their valid views on the topic. The session resulted in a fruitful and impassioned discussion.
