Liberty Discussion on ” The Institutions of a Free Society”

Liberty Discussion is a program designed to engage and inform the core members on the ideas of market economy and classical liberal ideas. Discussions are made on contemporary issues (local or national) through open market perspective. The article is selected and shared within the members to prepare oneself for the program.

On January 29, 2022, Bikalpa, an Alternative, organized “Liberty Discussion” at Aims live bakery and coffee shop. The discussion for topic was titled on “The Institutions of a Free Society”. Around 17 participants attended the program.

During an in-house discussion, many of the participants were newcomers in the discussion. So, Participant’s opined on a wide range of issues regarding Free society. Mr. Sarwagya Raj Pandey ice-breaks the discussion session where he shared, “A free society is one in which individuals are free to live their lives (pretty much) as they wish, as long as they do not infringe on the right of others to do the same.”

He said freedom creates prosperity. It unleashes human talent, invention, and innovation, creating wealth where none existed before. Societies that have embraced freedom have made themselves rich. Those that have not have remained poor. He also shared his insights on many real-life examples regarding the role of the government and ordinary citizens in their life’s political and economic sphere.

However, other Participants noted that Economic Freedom is more important than political freedom in our life. We cannot secure our political rights without having economic freedom. Meanwhile, the discussion also touched upon the democratic principles of the country.

Participants also argued on the private monopoly market and Price-fixing system in certain areas of Nepal. The active participation by the attendee in the discussions helped them gain better perspectives on the sessions. Overall the discussion was very informative and thought-provoking, it raised questions on various important topics which made participants ponder on the government’s role and activities.
