Liberty Discussion on ” The beauty of Market “

Liberty Discussion is a program designed to engage and inform the core members on the ideas of market economy and classical liberal ideas. Discussions are made on contemporary issues (local or national) through open market perspective. The article is selected and shared within the members to prepare oneself for the program. The program is organized at the venue of Bikalpa – an Alternative on every alternative Saturday (twice a month).

Bikalpa an Alternative organized its Liberty Discussion Series on the topic ‘The beauty of Market’ on August 22, 2020. The discussion aims to provide insight into the sphere of socio-economic and political issues.

Mr. Abhinayak Malla started the session stressing on the free market and Intellectual property rights. He said in this pandemic situation if a company or organization is supposed to find a coronavirus vaccine. Should it be allowed to have a patent in a vaccine or should it or should it be put free domain. What would be the role of government in this situation? Here during the discussion session, diverse opinions were floated and participants debated whether the Government should intervene and monitor or should there be freedom to individual or company to hold their patent rights. Commenting on it one of the participants argued knowledge is common to all. It is also social capital in society. In this scenario ethically no one can hold a monopoly in knowledge. We should not treat the knowledge as good in the market. Further other participants talked about Flexibility in patent rights where she said the case of the coronavirus is of Public Emergency, so in this case, by notifying the patent inventor we can promote for some time for public noncommercial use. However, other participants were quick to point out on questioning of getting patent rights and its reliability. Overall, the participants also shared their valid views on the topic. The session resulted in a fruitful and impassioned discussion. The discussion ended with concluding remarks by Basanta Adhikari
