Liberty Discussion on “Positive and Negative Liberty”

Liberty Discussion is a program designed to engage and inform the core members on the ideas of market economy and classical liberal ideas. Discussions are made on contemporary issues (local or national) through open market perspective. The article is selected and shared within the members to prepare oneself for the program. The program is organized at the venue of Bikalpa – an Alternative on every alternative Saturday (twice a month).

The Liberty discussion session for the month of April was held on 3rd April 2021 at Dolphin Education Consultancy.

The discussion started touching upon the topic Negative and Positive Liberty where Negative liberty is the absence of obstacles; positive liberty is the presence of powers or abilities. Negative freedom is freedom from interference. You are negatively free to the extent that other people do not restrict what you can do. Whereas negative freedom is freedom from control by others. The views of the participants were mixed. They shared we must accept some restrictions on our negative freedom to avoid social disorder in society. All states require their citizens to follow laws and regulations designed to help them live together and make society function smoothly. We accept these restrictions on our freedom as a trade-off for other benefits, such as peace, security, and prosperity. At the same time, most of us would insist that some areas of life should not be regulated, and individuals should have considerable, if not complete, freedom. There was also discussion on different philosophical aspect of liberty which helped participants to understand the values of liberty.

Overall, the participants also shared their valid views on the topic. The session resulted in a fruitful and impassioned discussion. 14 participant’s attended the program.
