Liberty Discussion is a program designed to engage and inform the core members on the ideas of market economy and classical liberal ideas. Discussions are made on contemporary issues (local or national) through open market perspective. The article is selected and shared within the members to prepare oneself for the program. The program is organized at the venue of Bikalpa – an Alternative on every alternative Saturday (twice a month).
Bikalpa, an Alternative, organized a regular Liberty discussion on ‘Is There Any Correlation Between Political Freedom and Economic Freedom?’ on 6th March, 2021.
The discussion started with a question from the moderator: How do we understand political freedom and Economic Freedom? The discussion began with participants expressing their views on a general understanding of the topic. Participants shared today; we live in a society that also means the State’s existence, enormous power, and resources. Political freedom is the ability of a nation’s citizens to participate freely in the political process. Political freedom also means putting some limits to the action of the State.
At the same time, other shared Economic freedom is the right of every individual to work, to have their labor and property rights to secure them. It implies minimal intervention by the State. Similarly, Political freedom is a guarantee, and most often a prerequisite for economic freedom. Political freedom and economic freedom are correlated and mutually supportive.
Economic freedom is important for Political freedom because of which prosperity—can be built. For example, a rule of law that respects property rights enforce contracts, and punishes corruption is essential for business enterprise operation. There was also discussion on role of the state in promoting economic freedom for all citizen.
