The ongoing nation-wide lockdown due to the Covid-19 pandemic has left a devastating impact on the Economy.  So, Bikalpa an Alternative hosted Liberty Discussion virtually in collaboration with Network For Free Society on 16 May 2020 Saturday at the topic of  “If goods don’t cross borders, soldiers will.

The discussion main agenda was related to protectionism, self-sufficiency, trade war policy of the government. During the discussion, the participants come with some vital points. It started with the question that Trade is such a thing that helps to facilitate peace between two countries. Trade helps in avoiding war between countries. While talking about the topic one of the participants argued it’s not always true although there isn’t physical conflict there is still a cold war ongoing between the countries. So, we should also think about it. On the contrary, to it some others said that in today’s context beyond political ideologies and stand trade had helped to prosper and maintain peace. Furthermore, one of the participants also shared if we talk about Free trade then there should be the intervention of government. It should act as an umpire between players.  There should be an equal level of playing field in the market. In Nepal there no such policy.  Free trade is good but we should also not deny that it affects our local industry. While opening up for trade we should also think about it and have a strategic policy for it.  Also participated expressed that there is an exchange of culture due to the trade and dissimilarities only lead to the conflict.

There was 19 attendee present in the online discussion.
