Liberty Discussion is a program designed to engage and inform the core members on the ideas of market economy and classical liberal ideas. Discussions are made on the contemporary issues (local or national) through open market perspective. Article is selected and shared within the members to prepare oneself for the program. The program is organized at the venue of Graduate Coach Biratnagar on every alternative Saturday (twice a month).
On March 03, 2018 the participants of Liberty Discussion Group sat down at Graduate Coach to discuss on “Freedom of Speech”. On this series, discussion was made on the Article of “Free Speech”, where 12 numbers of part to discuss their views. The program is organized to engage core members and new comers who are interested on the issue and ideas of liberty, public policy and political economy.
The discussion kicked off with some deliberation over what Free Speech means, how that could affect in our lives, and what implications it holds for a democracy. The participants discussed that it is a social contract in which everybody had rights to enjoy it by not violating others rights. Agreeing to it, they talked about Free speech and right to free expression is foundations of democracy. So, Citizens should be free to criticize government authorities on social media platforms other by other means. Criticism of government is an integral part of democracy. They agreed that it is constitutional rights of every citizens. The government has no obligation to provide a particular platform for expression, but it cannot impose barriers to platforms of expression that already exist. In addition to this, Freedom of speech is also part of Human Rights. We should encourage free thinking because it will help to building progressive society and nation. Disagreements were also floated in views that one should accepts reasonable limits on the freedom of expression. Since, no right is absolute. It differs from country to country. Also, it hard to believe that at what point it conducive for undemocratic countries.
