Liberty Discussion on ” AID OR TRADE “

Liberty Discussion is a program designed to engage and inform the core members on the ideas of market economy and classical liberal ideas. Discussions are made on contemporary issues (local or national) through open market perspective. The article is selected and shared within the members to prepare oneself for the program. The program is organized at the venue of Bikalpa – an Alternative on every alternative Saturday (twice a month).

Bikalpa an Alternative organized its Liberty Discussion Series on the topic ‘ AID OR TRADE ’ on 3rd October 2020. This week content of the article was quite provocative and conventional where diverse opinions were presented by participants. The discussion began by throwing light on both good and bad aspects of AID and Trade in the present context.

Undoubtedly some of the participants who supported the free market drew argument in the favor of the Market economy. They shared the importance of trade not direct foreign aid for the current economic development of the country. While discussing they pointed out that trade between different countries is an important factor in raising living standards, providing employment, and enabling consumers to enjoy a greater variety of goods. Many poor countries have uplift their economy scale by embracing free-market policy. AID creates a dependency on other countries.

Continuing the discussion some of the participants also disagreed and argued Developing countries like us who are in the infant stage of development may not be in a position to benefit from free trade. At first, we need to build strong institutions where Aid can help improve infrastructure and transport links which will enable to help the poor people for developing the economy. Aid is also needed in emergencies which helps in rebuilding the developing country from the natural disaster. Overall, the participants also shared their valid views on the topic. The session resulted in a fruitful and impassioned discussion.
