Solidarity on Anti-Corruption Civil Movement in Biratnagar

On May 20, 2023, Bikalpa an Alternative, in collaboration with the Biratnagar civil society movement, organized an Anti-corruption demonstration campaign at Traffic Chowk. The event aimed to pressure the government, urging them not to spare anyone involved in corruption cases. This was also followed up by the program to extend Bikalpa support to the Citizen Campaign Against Corruption initiated by the Biratnagar civil society movement.

The campaign activity proceeded by appealing to the volunteers to join the Street Campaign on that day by creating a Facebook event. Different slogans were created to create awareness of the issue and increase the campaign’s effectiveness. The protest was also joined by our Bikalpa fellowship members and other participants holding up placards and banners adorned with slogans demanding an end to corruption and the resignation of corrupt officials.

The atmosphere was charged with determination and a collective voice against the pervasive issue of corruption in Nepal, which has been impeding the country’s progress and development. The protesters passionately called for the government to take strong measures to curb corruption and ensure that corrupt officials face justice.

During the event, several speakers from civil society organizations and Bikalpa fellow members took the stage to address the gathered crowd. They said that corruption had become a significant problem in Nepal and that it was hindering the country’s development. Many of them chose to express their thoughts and concerns through powerful recitations of poems and speeches against Anti-Corruption. Their impassioned words echoed the sentiments of the protesters, demanding a fair investigation into the fake Bhutanese refugee scam and advocating for legal action against the guilty parties.

The demonstration was a poignant reminder of our collective responsibility to fight corruption. It showcased the determination and unity of the people in their quest for a corruption-free society. The event garnered significant media attention, spreading the message far and wide and inspiring others to join the cause. The program helped raise awareness, demand accountability, and work towards a more transparent and just society. Different delegates from the Local also attended the campaign and took instant interviews with participants regarding the issue. Following that, all the participants then gathered for a tea session near Traffic Chowk. The formal Street Campaign ended with a vote of thanks by the organizing team at 6:00 pm.
