Liberty Discussion on “Self -interest or Altruism”

Liberty Discussion is a program designed to engage and inform the core members on the ideas of market economy and classical liberal ideas. Discussions are made on the contemporary issues (local or national) through open market perspective. The article is selected and shared within the members to prepare oneself for the program. The program is organized at the venue of Bikalpa – an Alternative on every alternative Saturday (twice a month).

On, Saturday, February 16, 2019, regular participants gathered on the Bikalpa office for the regular formal Liberty Discussion. The discussion article for this week is “self-interest or altruism”.

The prevailing topic of discussion was Self Interest or Altruism. The discussion revolved around the mechanism of Human behavior and their self-interest. In the article, the author talks about it is good to selfish and live your life for yourself. You should not sacrifice yourself for the collective of society. The Sanskrit word for selfishness is Swartha and it is beautiful. Swartha means “that which is meaningful for the self”. Swa means the self, the soul, and artha means meaning.

During the discussions time, it was started by one of the participants who spoke about reciting his against Self-interest. He opined that Self-interest will cease the people for a better society. Some others discussed it the voluntary cooperation of self-interest in human nature which helps in the coexistence of the peace in the society. From butcher to servant everybody works for their self-interest.  Furthermore, some other added no human being can take their advantage of self-interest until there is no individual freedom in society. Furthermore, other participant argued that self – interest had caused inequality in society. Due to the selfishness and greed of people. There is misbalance in the wealth created in the society. There is also a fault line in this system. We need to reevaluate this system. However, some other participants did not quite agree with this view. Overall, the participants also shared their valid views on the topic and suggested there are different theory social and economic theory should be used to solve the issues.
