Liberty Discussion is a program designed to engage and inform the core members on the ideas of market economy and classical liberal ideas. Discussions are made on contemporary issues (local or national) through open market perspective. The article is selected and shared within the participants to prepare oneself for the program.
On October 19, 2023, Bikalpa an Alternative organized a Liberty Discussion in collaboration with American Corner Biratnagar on “why economic freedom is the best weapon against Poverty”. The Liberty Discussion provides a platform for young minds to broaden their perspectives on financial freedom, limited government, sound money and freedom to trade. The event saw the active participation of 23 youths who engaged in insightful conversation.
As the discussion began, the participants showed great interest in understanding economic freedom, the role of government, and the cause of Poverty. The participants shared their views on the freedom to start a business or to trade without government interference. The role of government should be limited to protecting property rights and maintaining the rule of law. The participants discussed how government policy hurdles economic growth and leads the nation to Poverty. The participants agreed that countries with institutions and policies more accordant with financial freedom have expeditious economic growth and a reduction in poverty rates. The participants also discussed China and India’s rise after freeing markets, opening up markets to international trade, deregulating the economy, and allowing voluntary exchange of individuals. The participants opined that foreign aid has a negative impact on economic growth if not used strategically. The participants also took the example of South Korea, a poor country 60 years ago is now one of the wealthiest countries in the world by embracing economic freedom, liberalized trade, foreign investment, substantial property rights and utilizing foreign aid.
During the discussion, the participants acknowledged that economic freedom is a core development for every individual growth and reduce Poverty. Economic freedom, the single greatest driver of prosperity, also leads to the high Human Development Index of the country. The session turned in a fruitful and constructive discussion.
