Liberty Discussion on “Understanding Posperity & Poverty”

Liberty Discussion is a program designed to engage and inform the core members on the ideas of market economy and classical liberal ideas. Discussions are made on the contemporary issues (local or national) through open market perspective. Article is selected and shared within the members to prepare oneself for the program. The program is organized at the venue of Bikalpa – an Alternative on every alternative Saturday (twice a month).

On September 15, 2018, members of Liberty Discussion Group came together yet again to deliberate over one of the most heated topic understanding poverty and prosperity. It was thought-provoking discussion on the article. The discussion kicked off with some deliberation over power struggle in political institution and economic institution. As, writer had focused on inclusive economic institution which enforces property rights and in creating playing field for all but extractive institution that are structured to extract resources from many by the few and fail to protect rights or provide incentive for economic activity. Furthermore, some participant pointed out that, we are fighting for power struggle. There is power struggle in income and resources. Our Political institution and economic intuition are not inclusive. It is extractive in nature. Nepal is focusing on extractive economy which will cause financial burden in days to come. Also, we can say we don’t have political leader but political traders. When any foreign country operates the business in host country. They see how much government supports it, how much politics affects the market, how much ease it is to entry in Market and exit and currency flu cation rate. Over all they see the good governance which should legal binding and well-structured and executed.

While discussing from other side, some argued that even developed countries poor people are better off than developing countries. When, we talk about poverty and prosperity then have to focus on making our people prosper utilizing human capital. Participant’s also criticized the government welfare scheme of providing unemployment Stipend money. It’s not thing’s more than populist political agenda.
