Liberty Discussion on “ Property Right and Justice”

Liberty Discussion is a program designed to engage and inform the core members on the ideas of market economy and classical liberal ideas. Discussions are made on contemporary issues (local or national) through open market perspective. The article is selected and shared within the members to prepare oneself for the program. The program is organized at the venue of Bikalpa – an Alternative on every alternative Saturday (twice a month).

Bikalpa, an Alternative, organized online Liberty Discussion session via zoom on 5 August 2021. The discussion for topic was titled on “Property and Justice “from the Nepali translated version of Foundations of a Free Society book by Eamonn Butler. Around 13 participants attended the session through Zoom Meeting.

The discussion was centered on the general perspective of property rights, rule of and Human rights .Therefore, major arguments were made from the lens of political economy. The discussion session started with sharing of Mr sarwagya Raj Pandey where he introduced the importance of Property rights and presented his arguments regarding the suitability of markets in treating value derived from the exchange as ethics. He also shared private property system gives individuals the exclusive right to use their resources. Thus a level of property-rights higher than zero is beneficial for economic growth.

In addition, Participant expressed Self-interest is a powerful motivator for productivity. : If people are allowed to benefit from their own productivity, they are more likely to be productive. Also, Private property is a fundamental building block in law and the organization of society. The stronger the set of property rights, the stronger the incentive to work, save, and invest, and the more effective the operation of the economy. The more effectively an economy operates the more growth it will produce for any set of resources.

At the same time, several participants also opined their understanding regarding the Article .The session resulted in a fruitful and impassioned discussion.
