Liberty Discussion on “Property and Justice”

Liberty Discussion is a program designed to engage and inform the core members on the ideas of market economy and classical liberal ideas. Discussions are made on contemporary issues (local or national) through open market perspective. The article is selected and shared within the members to prepare oneself for the program.

On February 12, 2022, Bikalpa an Alternative in collaboration with Student for liberty organized Liberty Discussion Group at Aims live and Bakery café to discuss the article, ‘Property and Justice’ :

The discussion began with welcoming all the participants and insights about the bi-weekly liberty discussion. Participants enthusiastically discussed the idea of property rights and their importance in the development of human society. Neetu Sen, in her opening remarks, stated, “Property is not always something physical, It can be something non-physical too”. She also pointed out that Property also includes your rights over your own body and your right to enjoy the fruits of your labor.

In support of her statement, other participants added. Individuals, businesses, and governments can own property. The protection of property and the respect for property ownership allow people to build up productive capital. Different examples provided to clarify how owning property gives individuals the ability to protect themselves and to make their own choices, or express their views, without being subjected to the arbitrary will of others, either governments or individuals.

However, the participants also discussed Morality and Justice where ideas were taken and passed around as A fundamental feature of the rules of justice is that they should apply equally to everyone. Laws and justice are not always the same thing. The session resulted in an interactive and informative debate on context of Nepal about property rights and rule of law in country.
