Liberty Discussion on “How should price Be Determined? “

Liberty Discussion is a program designed to engage and inform the core members on the ideas of market economy and classical liberal ideas. Discussions are made on contemporary issues (local or national) through open market perspective. The article is selected and shared within the members to prepare oneself for the program. The program is organized at the venue of Bikalpa – an Alternative on every alternative Saturday (twice a month).

Bikalpa an Alternative organized its Liberty Discussion Series on the topic “How should price Be Determined? ” on 05 December 2020. This week’s content of the article was quite provocative and conventional where diverse opinions were presented by participants.

As the discussion began, the participants put different opinions regarding the price determination in the market. Some of the discussion participants shared the general idea of the market determining the price of goods and services. One of the participants shared that a product’s price is determined by the law of supply and demand in the market.  While others argued, the government should have a certain level of price monitoring and regulation in the price of essential goods with no substitution.

Some of the participants also pointed out that when the government fixes the price ceiling in the market, there will be a monopoly in the market. Price control will make the market disruptive. It is also the government’s primary role to ensure the market’s rule of law and management monopolistic behavior.
