Liberty Discussion on “Economic freedom and its role in economic growth”

Liberty Discussion is a program designed to engage and inform the core members on the ideas of market economy and classical liberal ideas. Discussions are made on contemporary issues (local or national) through open market perspective. The article is selected and shared within the members to prepare oneself for the program. The program is organized at the venue of Bikalpa – an Alternative on every alternative Saturday (twice a month).

Bikalpa an Alternative organized online “Liberty Discussion” in collaboration with Network For Free Society on the topic “Economic freedom and its role in economic growth” on July 25, 2020. The distinguished participants in the discussion were from different backgrounds. The discussion was moderated by Mr. Sarwagya raj Pandey while the concluding remarks were given by Mr. Basanta Adhikari.

During the discussion, one of the participants put forth the opening remarks on the importance of economic freedom where he shared Economic freedom tends to cause a less social problem in society. Most of the developed countries have economic freedom which had to help them to prosper. Taking forward the discussion, other participant Shristika extended the argument that Economic freedom is directly related to the nation’s per capita income and GDP of the country. The study also has revealed that an economically free country lies in the richest country in the world. She also added Hong Kong is the best example of a Free-market System. Where there is no tariff system due to which Free trade had flourished. Addressing the role of government, she said, In any nation, the role of government should be limited to protect property rights, Maintain Rule of law, and Resolve the conflict.

Also during the period of discussion, the participants deliberated and discussed the Indicator of Country Economic Freedom Parameter. The discussion also touched on having Economic freedom also leads to the high Human Development Index of the country.  Turning to the criticisms, some of the participants argued that the political structure system of any country plays a vital role in the promotion of Economic Freedom. They are interrelated to each other. So there should be good political culture and a good governance system.
