Friday Discussion is a program designed to engage and inform the core members on the ideas of free market economy and classical liberal ideas. Discussions are made on the contemporary issues (local or national) through free market perspective. Article is selected and shared within the members to prepare oneself for the program. The program is organized at the venue of Hotel Namaskar, Biratnagar on every alternative Friday (twice a month).
The members of the Friday Discussion Group sat down at Hotel Namaskar Bar , on the 23rd of December to discuss the article “The Dharma of Capitalism”.
The author of the article claims that Human beings may be immoral and will behave badly whether in a socialist or a capitalist society or under a democracy or autocracy. Author further argues about nonwestern roots for the ideas of liberty and market capitalism that is called “Dharma”. i.e. which is concerned with Duty, goodness, justice, law and custom to do the right thing, both in the private and public Life.
Different member of the groups had differing views about the arguments presented in the article. The one-and-a-half-hour discussion mostly revolved around the writer talks.
The discussion started with by one of the participants who regarded Market system as good idea for development of the society. It is based on underlying norms that are commonly shared by the people, and which permits them to cooperate. We are on the era of the capitalism and the moral purpose of capitalism is take societies from poverty to prosperity.
Another participant also supported this argument by specifying “The market system depends ultimately not on laws but on the self-restraint of individuals”. In market system the market punishes to those who have low Dharma and rewards to those who had good reputation in the market. On the other hand, other participants discussed about the Human Resource and Natural Resources of the country. Without the vision of proper utilization of Natural resources and Human Resource a Prosperity could not be achieved. Although we had democracy in the present context but also the choice of the people in Market system are on state-control.
