Friday Discussion is a program designed to engage and inform the core members on the ideas of free market economy and classical liberal ideas. Discussions are made on the contemporary issues (local or national) through free market perspective. Article is selected and shared within the members to prepare oneself for the program. The program is organized at the venue of Hotel Namaskar, Biratnagar on every alternative Friday (twice a month).
The members of the Friday Discussion Group sat down at Hotel Namaskar Bar , on the 27th of January 2017 to discuss the article “Competition & Co-operation”.
Participants were well-interested in the chosen article. It was well informed discussion on the topic. As the discussion initiated, one of the participants expressed competition helps consumers to create choices in the market. It discourages the monopoly from the market. It will also create mobility of goods from one place to other. As author in the article also claims that both analytically and empirically, we can see that competitive systems produce better results than centralized or monopoly systems. The market is an essential element of civil society.it is the term used to refer to all the voluntary exchanges that take place in a society.
During the discussion participant having personal discomfort share that Market is not moral. Too much competition and too little cooperation can cause intolerable inequities and instability in the society. Contrary to it participants also discussed that we do not have competitive market. Anti-competitive practices like price fixing, syndicates and cartels in every sector have distorts the market system. Regulatory hurdles, corruption, political intervention in the economy has made Nepal one of the toughest countries to do business. Participants also agreed on the key our market completion and cooperation ailments may lie in the absence of economic freedom.
