Deausi Bhailo Program 2080: Book Collection for Bikalpa Library

Deepawali is one of the most auspicious Hindu festivals also referred to as the festivals of light. It is celebrated as Tihar in Nepal. During the festival, people light Diyos (oil lamp), pray to the goddess of wealth and also present gifts to the near and dear ones. One such tradition originating from the Hills of Nepal is Deusi Bhailo. It is a tradition in which youths visit homes of friends and family, and perform various folk songs alongside showering blessings on their host. In exchange, the host provides the group with money, food, and beverages.

Bikalpa has been celebrating this occasion by organizing “Deusi Bhailo program”- a traditional folk custom with an aim to raise funds for the public library housed at Bikalpa’s resource center. This celebration has been going on for 9 years till date with the help of numerous volunteers associated to Bikalpa. This is a very special and emotional event in Bikalpa’s calendar as it brings people from diverse background and culture together to collaborate for a cause, and over the years has evolved as a platform for reunion of older volunteers and reach-out to the longtime local partners of Bikalpa.

This fundraising event has helped us collect over 2200 books and related materials for the public library in the last 9 years. The library has been a great resource for students and avid readers, and we have over a hundred active subscribers. Bikalpa’s library is also a good resource center where you can read, discuss, and most importantly network with other readers. This year the Deausi Bhailo Program took place on November 11, 2023, organized by Bikalpa Fellowship members . The objective of the program was to engage Bikalpa Fellow Members in fundraising for social cause and to collect the books to upgrade the Bikalpa Library.  Bikalpa also engages fellow members in different civic engagement issues. This program also continued its traditional role of being a platform for build good networks within and outside the Bikalpa Fellowship Members. The program started at 8:30 am and continued until 10:30 pm, where the event brought together youths from diverse backgrounds.

Despite the seemingly routine nature of the cultural event, extensive planning and dedication were imperative for its seamless execution. Volunteers underwent rigorous rehearsals to perfect the Deusi and Bhaili songs, meticulously compiled donor lists, and managed the logistics of transporting a sizable group and equipment. 42 youths from diverse background came together to celebrate this event. The group comprising of volunteers, musicians, and singers were hosted by 10 households and collected Rs. 38,500 in cash and some books . Many of the donors have also pledged to support with more funds and books in the future as the team was unable to reach out to many other hosts due to time limitation. The funds and books collected at the event will be utilized for acquiring books, maintaining the library space and other library related expenses.

In conclusion, the Deusi Bhailo program stands as a testament to the power of community, cultural celebration, and philanthropy, enriching Bikalpa’s library and leaving an indelible mark on the journey of the enthusiastic youths involved. Appreciation is extended to all who have played a part in its success, ensuring the continued growth and impact of Bikalpa’s resource center.
